Description

This presentation will address the myths and realities of the commercial sexual exploitation of children in America. It will discuss the impact and the attitudes toward this epidemic and how popular culture influences and reinforces these views.

This workshop will describe the gradual normalization of sexual exploitation and how this has conditioned many aspects of US socieity to believe prostitution is socially acceptable. It will seek to empower service providers, social workers, and therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to deal compassionately and effectively with the increasing population of exploited youth.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this comprehensive workshop, the participants will:

  • Articulate the risk factors of growing up as a female in today’s society
  • Describe antecedents that make a girl vulnerable to sexual exploitation
  • Outline the specialized needs of at-risk girls
  • Understand the “pornification” of the youth culture which targets children
  • Describe the strategies pimps/exploiters use to recruit girls into prostitution
  • Outline several approaches regarding how to end the demand for women and children’s involvement in the sex industry

The goal of the workshop is to empower service providers, social workers, and therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to deal compassionately and effectively with the increasing population of exploited youth.
