A message of reconciliation" Abstract: Things weren’t going so well for Israel when the prophet Isaiah spoke to a nation in the midst of a state of exile. The nation had rebelled against God and were punished. Isaiah’s role as God’s servant was both prophetic and yet priestly. Isaiah pronounced judgment but yet provided a message of hope. As a social worker in the Christian faith, we often serve in this dual role of prophet and priest. Like Isaiah, we come across people who are discouraged due to consequences of their action but as God’s servants we can serve as His messenger of hope! Primary Audience: Open to all Content Level: Open to all Number of Continuing Education Contact Hours: No CEUs Bio Information: Patty has been in the field of social work since 1977. Fresh out of college, she began her social work training as a houseparent with teen girls in a group foster home and as a houseparent in a maternity dorm with Buckner Children and Family services in San Antonio. Within a year, she served as a caseworker until 1990. She resigned to begin and complete her MSW studies at the Carver School of SW in Louisville, KY. Upon graduation, Patty served as the first LMSW in an elementary school for Northside ISD in San Antonio. Because of the dominant Latino school population and serving under a Christian principal, Patty had many opportunities to integrate her faith with practice. In 1999, her role changed from direct practice to consultant with congregations, familiarizing them with holistic community ministry practices. Patty returned to Buckner and currently works as the National Director of Church and Community Initiatives. She serves as an adjunct social work professor for the Baptist University of the Americas in San Antonio, TX. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sunday Morning Speaker—Sunday, October 20, 2013
