Abstract:
Building communities of shalom requires a humble commitment to the hard
work of transforming the brokenness of community structures, practices,
laws and human behavior. In that “the earth is the Lord’s and everything
in it” we must work to see God’s reconciling grace make all things new.
This workshop will define strategies through which urban revitalization
and adult learning and empowerment services can be successfully merged
to yield thriving communities and broader life achievement for all its
residents.

"Congregational Social Work in 2015"
Abstract:
The
institute will begin with an orientation to congregational social work.
We will explore a diversity of job descriptions in congregational
practice. Participants will have opportunity to present for feedback and
consultation their own job descriptions or to write a job description if
they are working without one in a congregation currently. Those social
workers not in a congregational setting will have opportunity to write a
description of their current work as it does or could relate to
congregations, or a description for a future such position in their home
congregation. Everyone will have opportunity to explore their own
professional paths in congregational social work. We will discuss the
challenges and opportunities of this practice setting and what makes it
unique in social work practice.

"Grappling with
Faith: Teaching with Decision Cases"
Abstract:
This workshop will introduce
the case method of teaching using didactic and experiential methods.
Essentially, the case method involves in-depth class discussions of
open-ended accounts of actual practice situations that are themselves
ambiguous and complex. These accounts require participants to first
formulate the problem and then decide on a course of action. The case
discussions help participants to acquire and refine important critical
thinking and decision-making skills. The workshop will provide a
rationale and guidance for using case method in Christian higher
education, in part through a live case discussion and debriefing. It
will also provide tips for using cases from NACSW¹s Grappling with
Faith, additional resources for learning to use the case method, and
suggestions for evaluating student learning outcomes.
